In a world where digital noise is constant and attention spans are short, the power of a clear, authentic voice has never been more important. And no one understands this better than Beth Knaus, founder of That’s A Spade Copywriting Services. With a passion for helping entrepreneurs communicate who they are and what they stand for, Beth has carved out a space where strategy meets soul, and storytelling becomes a business asset.
Based just outside Boston, MA, Beth brings a refreshing mix of wit, wisdom, and a deep understanding of what it takes to connect with the right audience. Her clients span industries, but they all have one thing in common: they’re great at what they do, but not so great at talking about it. That’s where Beth steps in, helping them find and refine their voice so they can show up confidently, attract the right clients, and grow sustainably.
In this feature, Beth shares the journey that led her from small business ownership to copywriting, what she wishes more people understood about her craft, and why being honest in your messaging is the most powerful marketing move you can make.
Lynn Davey: Tell me a little about yourself! Where are you from, and what inspires you every day?
Beth Knaus: I’m originally from Long Island, NY, but have now lived in the Boston area longer than I did in NY. I’m inspired by people who stand up and go against the grain when it counts the most. I’m inspired by my three adult kids, who are building self-sustaining, responsible, and joy-filled lives. As a writer for small business owners, I’m inspired by clients who learn how to use their voices, perspectives, and personal experience in their communications to increase visibility and reach the clients they’re equipped to serve best. And as a personal writer, I’m inspired by the impact writing can have on other people’s lives.
LD: How would you describe your business in one sentence?
BK: Giving entrepreneurs the clarity, comfortability, and confidence to speak and write about themselves, their businesses, and how they deliver their services in an honest and authentic way.
LD: What does your business do, and who do you serve?
BK: I write content, develop messaging, and consult with clients about the best way to show up through their communications. I serve entrepreneurs who are great at what they do, but not great at communicating in their own voice, using differentiators to stand out. They struggle to navigate the strategy of effective storytelling, and need an expert to help them define their voice and infuse it into their content messaging.
LD: What inspired you to start your business, and what was the moment you knew this was the path for you?
BK: I have been writing personally since middle school. After college, I owned and managed a small business, and loved all of it – the marketing, managing people, and the leadership. I sold the business to stay home and raise my kids, and over time, my interest in both writing and business led me to shift gears and start That’s A Spade Copywriting Services.
LD: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your industry or the work you do?
BK: The work I do is NOT transactional. It involves researching, coaching, educating, consulting, compromising:)…. I build personal relationships with my clients so I can understand who they are and then write content that honors that.
LD: What do you love most about running your business?
BK: Flexibility. I can work from anywhere. I can work Saturday afternoon, Tuesday night, and take off Wednesday. The next week can be totally different. As long as I get the work done, I can schedule work time when it suits me.
LD: How does your business make a difference, either in your community, industry, or for your clients?
BK: I think when clients can recognize their voice and own what makes them unique then use it to communicate their value, they attract their best clients, do their best work, get excellent reviews, and referrals to more of those better fit clients. Then they can charge their worth because their worth is clear.
LD: What’s a project, initiative, or moment in your career that you’re most proud of?
BK: I was asked to work on a sustainability report with a designer and brand messaging expert. It was for a company that produces vanilla and other spices sourced from places like Madagascar. Their mission was to educate the farmers and pay them a respectful wage so they could live a stable life financially. And they had a consistent presence on the ground in these countries, working side by side with the people. Really inspiring. I was flattered and grateful to be a part of the project.
LD: Are there any causes or organizations you support that align with your mission?
BK: Yes, I love More Than Words, a Boston organization that trains and employees disadvantaged youths to run and operate their bookstores. It gives them business experience, confidence in their abilities, and connection to communities.
LD: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a business owner, and how did you overcome it?
BK: Doing everything I have to run my business without stifling my creativity. Administrative tasks can suck the life out of you, LOL. So I break them up, work in a coffee shop, balance the compulsory responsibilities with fun.
LD: What’s a piece of advice you’d share with another woman who is thinking about starting her own business?
BK: Do it. You can make it happen if it’s what you really want. Develop connections with other professionals and support each other. It’s hard but rewarding.
LD: Coffee or tea? How do you take it?
BK: Tea! Preferably P&G Tips, steeped with boiling water (no microwave) in a pre-warmed cup, with warmed oat milk.
LD: If you could have dinner with one inspiring woman (living or passed), who would it be and why?
BK: Georgia O’Keefe. She was super talented, and built and impressive reputation despite the fact that she was competing in a hugely male-dominated field. She was scared, but didn’t let it stop her. She was also passionate about protecting nature and the land, and created evocative and thought-provoking art.
LD: Where can people find you or learn more about your business?
BK: You can find me a www.thatsaspade.com as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
