When it comes to standing out online, words matter… and Judi Harrington knows exactly how to make them count. As the creative force behind Judi 411, she helps business owners in technical industries like law, finance, and real estate turn complex ideas into website copy that’s anything but boring. With a talent for cutting through jargon and showcasing a brand’s true voice, Judi isn’t just a copywriter, she’s a digital storyteller, strategist, and differentiator detective.
In this edition of Women Business Owners Who Are Making a Difference, I’m spotlighting Judi’s journey… from translating complicated industry speak into compelling content to helping businesses finally sound as brilliant as they are. Her story is full of sharp insight, practical wisdom, and just the right dose of Boston-born candor.
Lynn Davey: Tell me a little about yourself! Where are you from, and what inspires you every day?
Judi Harrington: I’m Judi Harrington, the voice behind Judi 411—your go-to for digital storytelling that makes businesses shine. I work with business owners, particularly in technical fields like finance, law, and real estate, to turn their expertise into website copy that’s clear, compelling, and designed to be read—and acted upon. I’m also known for my superpower of identifying a business’s unique differentiator and crafting their story to showcase it, speaking directly to their ideal client in their unique voice.
I grew up in the Boston area, which means I talk fast, think fast, and get straight to the point—just like good copy should. Every day, I’m inspired by the power of words to shape how businesses connect with their audience. A great website doesn’t just list services; it tells a story that builds trust and authority and, most importantly, drives action. That’s where I come in—helping businesses cut through the noise and say what matters in a way that resonates.
Also, coffee. Coffee inspires me every day.
LD: How would you describe your business in one sentence?
JH: I craft clear, compelling website copy for business owners in technical fields, transforming complex ideas into engaging content that builds trust and drives action.
LD: What does your business do, and who do you serve?
JH: My business is all about transforming complex ideas into clear, compelling website copy that gets results. I work mostly with professional services, particularly in technical fields like finance, law, and real estate, as well as coaches, consultants, and speakers who are looking to stand out in an overcrowded marketplace. My focus is on helping these businesses craft their unique story, showcase what sets them apart, and connect with their ideal clients in a way that drives action.
LD: What inspired you to start your business, and what was the moment you knew this was the path for you?
JH: After years of working in real estate, finance, and law, and spending countless hours doing English-to-English translation for technical topics, I realized I had a unique ability to make complex ideas clear and compelling. I saw so many businesses in these fields struggling to communicate what they do in a way that resonates with their audience. That’s when I knew this was my path—I could take what I’d learned from years of translating complicated jargon into simple, relatable language and use it to help businesses craft their stories. The moment I saw a client go from feeling invisible to standing out in a crowded marketplace, I knew I was on the right track.
LD: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your industry or the work you do?
JH: Your website isn’t a crockpot—you can’t just set it and forget it. It’s a living, breathing representation of your business, and it should evolve as you do. Too many people treat their website like a one-and-done project, filling it with generic statements like “we’re professional” and “we deliver on time.” But that’s just operating at par, not standing out. If you want to attract the right clients, you need to go deeper—what truly sets you apart? What’s the thing only you bring to the table? That’s the story your website needs to tell, and it’s not a one-time effort. It’s an ongoing conversation.
LD: What do you love most about running your business?
JH: Easy—I get to take businesses that are great at what they do but terrible at talking about it and turn their expertise into words that actually work. There’s nothing better than that moment when a client reads their new website copy and says, That’s it. That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to say. Watching them go from struggling to stand out to owning their differentiator—and seeing the right clients start showing up because of it—that’s the best part of what I do. Well, that and the fact that my boss (me) lets me work in yoga pants and take midday coffee breaks.
LD: How does your business make a difference, either in your community, industry, or for your clients?
JH: I make a difference by giving businesses the words they need to stand out and succeed. Take a women-owned CPA firm I worked with—they knew their website could be working harder for them, both to attract clients and as a recruiting tool. But, in their words, “We’re accountants, not writers.” Their old site was full of industry jargon and didn’t reflect who they really were: a firm that prioritized relationships, valued its team, and took a hands-on approach to guiding clients.
I helped them translate their expertise into clear, compelling copy that spoke directly to their ideal clients and potential hires. The result? A website that finally worked for them instead of just existing online. That’s what I do—take what makes a business unique and put it into words that connect, resonate, and drive action. Because if your website isn’t pulling its weight, it’s time for a rewrite.
LD: What’s a project, initiative, or moment in your career that you’re most proud of?
JH: One of the projects I’m most proud of happened early in my writing business when I worked with a web designer to create compelling copy for a real estate brokerage in the UT Austin area. Their niche? Helping out-of-state UT Austin students qualify for in-state tuition through a real estate purchase. They already had a thriving word-of-mouth business, but their website wasn’t pulling its weight.
We repositioned them as Texas Residency Experts, making their value proposition crystal clear. Then, we took it a step further—partnering with a world-renowned expert on UT Austin admissions whose blog is the go-to resource for applicants. The result? A website that wasn’t just informative but authoritative. And six years later, it’s still ranking at the top of Google search. That’s the power of the right words in the right place—when done well, they keep working long after you’ve hit publish.
LD: Are there any causes or organizations you support that align with your mission?
JH: Comfort Zone Camp is a cause near and dear to my heart. They offer free bereavement camps for kids ages 7 to 17 who have lost a parent or sibling—because if there’s anything more complicated than love, it’s grief. And grief is the price of love.
As someone who lost a parent at a young age, I find the mission deeply relatable. I wish I had had this kind of support when I was younger. We often don’t have the words to convey the scope of our feelings, especially when we’re young. As a grief worker with Comfort Zone Camp, I’ve ushered dozens of kids along their grief journey, giving them a safe space to share, process, and, most importantly, realize they’re not alone. Words may be my business, but sometimes, it’s about creating the space for someone else to find theirs. And there’s nothing more powerful than that.
LD: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a business owner, and how did you overcome it?
JH: One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a business owner was learning to niche down. Early on, I tried to cast a wide net, thinking I could serve everyone. But the truth is, when you serve everyone, you in fact serve no one. My message became diluted, and I was stretching myself thin, trying to meet the needs of people who weren’t really aligned with what I do best.
The breakthrough came when I embraced the idea that to truly make an impact, I needed to focus on the clients I could really serve—the ones who value clear, compelling storytelling that speaks directly to their ideal clients. Saying no to opportunities that weren’t a perfect fit wasn’t easy, but once I did, my business found its true rhythm.
Niching down has allowed me to create a more intentional, fulfilling business. Now, instead of spreading myself too thin, I’m able to focus on the work that excites me and makes a real difference for the clients I’m best equipped to serve.
LD: What’s a piece of advice you’d share with another woman who is thinking about starting her own business?
JH: There are no shortcuts. If you want to build a business, you have to put in the time and the effort. Don’t buy into the dream of a 4-day workweek right out of the gate—that’s not the reality. It takes consistency, dedication, and a willingness to learn along the way. If you’re truly committed to your business, you need to show up, do the work, and embrace the journey. The rewards come when you’ve put in the time and built a strong foundation. Trust the process, and stay the course.
LD: Coffee or tea? How do you take it?
JH: Coffee. I’ve loved it since I was sneaking sips from my dad’s cup as a kid. It’s been my go-to fuel ever since, and I even thanked Juan Valdez in my book acknowledgements. I take mine with a splash of oat milk, no sugar—because I’m sweet enough.
LD: What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?
JH: A cozy evening in the kitchen, trying out a new recipe or perfecting an old favorite. There’s something about getting lost in the rhythm of cooking that clears my mind. If I’m not cooking, I’m probably curling up with a good book or slipping into a calming yoga flow.
LD: Where can people find you or learn more about your business?
JH: You can find me at judi411.com as well as on LinkedIn and Substack.
LD: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
JH: Yes, actually—one thing I want to emphasize is that your website is just the beginning of your story. Once it’s done, the real work starts. Your story continues to unfold through nurturing content like blogs, newsletters, and email campaigns. These are the places where you can really connect with your audience, keep them engaged, and show them more of what makes your business unique.
Think of your website as your digital foundation, but your ongoing content is what breathes life into it. It’s where you keep the conversation going, share valuable insights, and build trust over time. So don’t stop at your website launch—keep nurturing your audience, and let your story evolve with them. That’s how you create lasting relationships and turn your website into a powerful tool for growth.
